Born in 1982 in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, and currently based in Kanagawa, Tomoya Tsukamoto is an active contemporary artist known for his distinctive painting language. He specializes in using an airbrush to layer extremely fine dots, creating visual effects reminiscent of Impressionist pointillism. Combined with dripping techniques and delicate brushwork, his approach produces a unique aesthetic vocabulary.
Tsukamoto’s signature method involves layering the three primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—creating optical color blending on the retina and further blurring the boundaries between figure and ground. His works often feature motifs such as cherry blossoms, koi fish, human figures, and deer, exploring cycles of light and shadow, life and death. In recent years, he has used real plants as stencils and employed figure-ground inversion techniques to reinterpret Georges Seurat’s visual mixing theory alongside the decorative sensibilities of the Japanese Rinpa school from a contemporary perspective. The result is a harmonious balance of intricate Japanese decorative aesthetics with minimalist compositional forms, inviting viewers into a deeply immersive experience.
